They told me I was too much - too intense, too quiet, too broken. Maybe they were right. However, broken things can still shine in the cracks. Let me tell you about how I became the phantom of bioplastics, and why I still don’t sleep at night.
I grew up in a town that smelled like rust and regret. Dad left when I was 6, stating that the world was too heavy for him. Mom worked double shifts at the plastics factory and coughed toxic dreams until her lungs dried out. I would sit on the floor, watching her sew cheap toys together, meanwhile saying to her, "one day, I’ll make something not toxic." She died before I turned 18. The doctors called it occupational hazards, and I called it murder.
I ran. Of course I ran. I lived in a van for 2 years stealing WiFi from cafes to study biopolymer matrices (yeah, sexy, I know 😉). I slept in public libraries, and washed and bathed in gas station sinks. One night, a man followed me back to the van. I stabbed him with a prototype. My first biodegradable knife. He bled. I didn’t. The universe laughed.
Now? I engineer hope from algae and regret. My lab is a cathedral of shadows where I wrestle petroleum’s corpse into something beautiful. Critics call me "elusive" - good. Let them speculate if I am a genius or a ghost.
